Linux Compatibility Testing Results

January 19, 2000

This document presents the results of the Linux Compatibility test, which included the installation and Testing of Redhat 6.1 with the Aten Master View Pro 16 port KVM switch.

KeyLabs' Linux compatibility testing of this system showed the Aten Master View Pro to be compatible with Redhat 6.1. The Aten Master View Pro is awarded the KeyLabs Linux Compatibility mark.

System Configuration

The following table defines the system configuration tested by KeyLabs.

KVM Hardware Tested
The unit tested was a 16-port connecting/switching device which allows the user to control 16 separate PCs from one KVM combination, i.e., one keyboard, mouse and monitor set controls up to sixteen (16) separate CPUs contained in separate housings. Additionally, the Master View Pro has sound ports which allow the connection of the speaker-out and microphone ports of each separate CPU unit as well, using one set of speakers/microphone for 16 CPUs.

The Aten Master View Pro provides connectors for a keyboard, monitor, mouse, speakers and microphone and, of course, provides connections for each of the above for sixteen separate CPU units. On the front of the unit it provides LEDs which indicate the CPU it is currently operating with, LEDs which indicate which connected units are powered up and separate buttons for manually switching between each of the sixteen CPUs. The Aten Master View Pro also has keyboard control of switching via a short sequence of keys (hotkeys) and an onscreen display for switching between connected units.

Testing Results

The following table provides the pass/fail result for the hardware as tested in this system by KeyLabs.

INSTALL THROUGH TEST
Install Linux on one or more CPUs while the CPUs are connected and controlled via the Master View Pro.PASS
Notes: The Master View Pro remained invisible to the connected units during the install and no adverse effects of going through the KVM were noted.

POWER CYCLE
Verify the Master View Pro is state-independent of its controlled CPUs.PASS
Notes: The Master View Pro remained invisible to the connected CPUs as they were shutdown and restarted.

Switching Commands Testing

HOT KEY SWITCHING
Verify the Master View Pro's switching works with Linux keyboard drivers. The Master View Pro isn't packaged with software but does have internal key commands and on-screen display capabilities allowing for rapid switching of CPUs from the keyboard.PASS
Notes: The Master View Pro performed flawlessly, maneuvering between CPUs with no conflicts with X, console screens or the controlling KVM units.
AUTO SWITCHING
Verify the functionality of the automatic switching feature of the Master View Pro and automatically cycle through the display output of the various connected CPUs.PASS
Notes: The Master View continued switching through the connected CPUs until a stop command was issued.

PS/2 Mouse - POINT, CLICK, DRAG
Verify the functioning of the mouse as the Master View Pro switches between the various CPUs.PASS
Notes: The mouse performed well under heavy switching with no noticeable switching effects on performance.

Monitor Testing

DISPLAY RESOLUTION TEST
Verify the stability of cycling through the various CPUs with X operating on each and at different resolutions.PASS
MONITOR ON/OFF TEST
Verify the stability of the displays on the various CPUs when the KVM monitor is turned off and on during cyclingPASS
Notes: The state of the monitor had no effect on the displays of the various CPUs with all displays functioning properly.

IDLE TIME TEST
Verify the Master View Pro can recover from idle periods without loss of keyboard, monitor or mouse contact.PASS
Notes: The Master View showed no negative effects from being left idle for a period of a over one hour.

Multiple OS Test

With Microsoft WINDOWS98
Verify the continued functionality of the connected CPUs and KVM units when running different operating systems on one or more of the connected CPUsPASS
Notes: The Master View Pro remained invisible to all connected CPUs with no adverse effects on operations when switching between CPUs running different operating systems.

Multi Head Test

Verify the various heads (each monitor, keyboard, mouse control point constitutes a "head") function properly when switching between connected units, including having both heads switched to the same CPU.N/A
Notes:

Sound Connect Test

With Harman/kardon Speakers
Verify the continued functionality of the connected CPUs when playing sound on each unit. KVM unit must switch properly between sounds as the tester switches between connected CPUs.PASS
Notes: The Master View Pro switched sound very well when switching between connected CPUs.
